  • BOB GUTENSTEIN ON JULES EPSTEIN

    August 04, 2015

At our recent Board Meeting, Jules Epstein was honored with the Certificate of Appreciation.  Here are the words spoken from Bob to Jules:

Leadership of the Wine and Food Society requires a great number of talents and full commitment.  One must combine creativity with the ability to motivate and inspire others while producing events that attract and educate the members.  Above all the President needs the ability to save an event if things go wrong.

Jules made it look easy.  Think of it, for almost 50 years he has chaired events, lead tours of the West Coast wineries.  Outstanding in my memory was an evening at the Sonoma Wine Auction where after tasting barrel samples, we had Harriet bid for us and win a barrel of Merry Edwards’ Olivett Lane Pinot Noir.  We ultimately had it labeled for us, shared it with our members in attendance and added some to our cellar, which unfortunately were long ago consumed.  Less know was his great contribution to the cellar.  At his insistence we insured our cellar despite coverage by the warehouse company.  When we suffered a loss by internal theft, his foresight to insure at replacement value allowed us to buy nearly eight times as many bottles of recent vintage outstanding Bordeaux that have been the backbone of events for over 15 years.

Jules is everyone’s friend, always working to help others.  Many of us have benefited from his good advice and support.  His leadership was recognized by the BGA when he was awarded the Andre Simon Bronze Medal.  Despite the requests by other wine societies, he has remained dedicated to us.  The uniqueness of our branch and the quality of our events are a result of that commitment.  The membership recognizes and appreciates this.  I for one consider him and example to emulate, as well as a close friend of mine.

    Thank you, Jules
