    Dear Nick,

On September 19 2013 I had the wonderful opportunity of dining at Brasserie 8 1/2 with the Wine and Food Society New York with a group of 65 members.
From the hors d'oeuvres to the dessert everything was absolutely perfect. Your service staff and chef, Franck Deletrain, created an event which was very well served and a great food extravaganza. You are complemented by the ability of those in your restaurant as it was a truly great evening.

As always looking forward to seeing you and again my thanks.

    Regards

    Joel

  • Try This Winner; We Will Taste Chateau Fieuzal Blanc at May 8, 2014 Jeopardy Dinner

    August 11, 2013

    2012 Chateau Fieuzal L’Abeille de Fieuzal Blanc - $300/case ($25/btl)

This is the crowd pleasing wine of Summer.  The efforts and investments that billionaire owner Lochlann Quinn has made at Chateau Fieuzal over the last decade are now clearly evident in the quality of this production.  This “second” white is made of the same exact grapes used in Chateau Fieuzal’s $75 grand vin. The grapes are fermented separately and aged in one year-old oak barrels for only a few months. Even in whites, balance is what Bordeaux does best: the crisp acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc is in perfect proportion with its fuller-bodied Semillion counterpart.  From winemaker Stephen Carrier (formerly of Lynch Bages), this remains one of the best quality-per-value wines coming out of Pessac-Leognan.  Chosen by Blue Hill at Stone Barns,  Nick and Toni’s, Gotham Bar & Grill, Jean-Georges, Core Club, Harlow, Craft Restaurant

  • Some History, our Third President and Close Friend of James Beard

    February 22, 2013

I discovered the name of the lady who ran our Society from 1939 until 1965 thanks to former President, (1979-86) Gerald M. Stein. We had a wonderful dinner together in Palm Beach last Sunday. Her name is Jeanne Owen. During her tenure, she worked on books with Richardson Wright, our second president, as well as serving as the Executive Director of the NYW&F. She maintained this position until her death. At which time a new set of by-laws was created and the branch was run by elected officers and a board of directors.

The following link is a reprint of a book on the life and times of Jim Beard. It's all a fun read, but the first mention of the NYW&F and Jeanne Owen is on page 94. You will get some insight into the person who kept our society and Jim going.

Gerald Stein is one of the few members to still talk about meeting Jeanne, James Beard, and our founder, Andre Simon.
